Description:
|
A tract-format statement signed by eight Italian-American Pentecostal leaders defending the teaching that Christians should abstain from eating food containing blood. This belief was held by most Italian and Italian-American Pentecostals of this era. The eight signatories are: John Marin, Leopoldo Tedeschi, Joseph Tessitore, Nicola Menna, Peter Zicaro, Felix Mattia, Louis Francescon, and Giovanni L. Garrou. The statement is in response to the arguments of the 'freedom party,' the school of thought (led by Giuseppe Petrelli) within Italian-American Pentecostalism that left blood product consumption up to the discretion of believers.
Giuseppe Petrelli (1876-1957) was a lawyer in Italy when he converted to the Baptist faith in 1905. He immigrated to America later that year and in 1906 he became co-pastor of an Italian Baptist church in New York City. He was baptized in the Holy Spirit in 1915 and became a prominent Italian-American Pentecostal theologian and writer.
