History:
Popular Gospel Truth, an early Chinese language Pentecostal periodical, was published by Norwegian-American missionary Bernt Berntsen. The periodical was initially published in Heibei Province and then in Beijing, China. Berntsen originally went to China in 1904 and worked with the non-denominational South Chihli Mission. He returned to the United States in 1907, seeking to learn more about the emerging Pentecostal revival. After being Spirit-baptized at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles, in 1908 he returned to China, where he became an influential figure in the Pentecostal movement. In 1914, Berntsen became a founding member of the Assemblies of God. He identified with the Oneness movement and left the Assemblies of God. Perhaps Berntsen's most significant legacy was his influence on Wei Enbo, the founder of the True Jesus Church, a Oneness Pentecostal body that is one of the largest Protestant churches in China.
