As a teenager, Candi Staton sang with her sister and a friend as the Jewell Gospel Trio. She then spent years in the world of pop and R&B music. She and her husband, John Sussewell, returned to Christ at the Huffman Assembly of God in Birmingham, Alabama.

This article tells the story of her connection to the Huffman Assembly, including recording the album 'Make Me an Instrument' at Spectrum Recording Services located at the Huffman Assembly. This was her first Christian album.

This album and a subsequent one, Sing a Song, received Grammy award nominations.

In 1986, the church moved to a new facility and was renamed Cathedral of the Cross.

Includes an associated brief article, 'Gospel Lives in Church Studio,' which tells of the recording studio at the Huffman Assembly.
