Description:
|
Photocopy of the passenger list of the RMS Campania, December 1906, a ship that traveled from New York City to Liverpool, England.
This passenger list includes a number of the earliest Pentecostal missionaries who were enroute to bring the Pentecostal message to Europe and Africa. Pentecostal missionaries identified on the list include: Thomas Ball Barratt (Norway) (p. 22); Julia and Willis Hutchins (Liberia) (p. 30); Leila McKinney (Liberia) (p. 30); Lucy Farrow (Liberia) (p. 30); George and Daisy Batman (Liberia) (p. 30); Samuel and Ardella Mead (Angola) (p. 30); Robert and Myrtle Shideler (Angola) (p. 30); F. M. Cook (Liberia) (p. 31).
Historian Cecil M. Robeck provides details about the missionaries to Liberia and their trip to Liberia, including their trip on the RMS Campania, in: The Azusa Street Mission and Revival (Thomas Nelson, 2006), 267-269.
Historian Geir Lie observes, based on this passenger list, that T. B. Barratt was probably familiar with (and perhaps believed) the doctrine of 'missionary tongues' (that tongues were actual languages to be used as a missionary tool), a belief held by the other early missionaries. See: Geir Lie, 'The Origin of T.B. Barratt's Concept of Missionary Tongues', 26 Cyberjournal for Pentecostal-Charismatic Research.
