The Ward Singers began in the 1930s when Gertrude Ward began singing with her two daughters, Willa and Clara. Over time, Clara would become the leader of the group, which became known as the Clara Ward Singers. The Wards started in Baptist churches and sang mostly gospel. Several others would be a part of the group, some of whom, such as Marion Williams, were Pentecostal. Williams was with the group from about 1947 to 1958.
Later, the Clara Ward Singers would take their music outside the church and sing in many other venues, including Las Vegas and Broadway. While continuing to include gospel, the group sang a wider variety of music in later years.
