Description: Charles W. Gray, portrait, head and shoulders; circa 1940s.
Halftone; digital copy only.
The Church of God (Sanctified Church), an Afro-American Holiness denomination, split from the Church of God in Christ in 1907. The split occured at the same time as the Church of God in Christ experienced another division between Pentecostals led by Charles H. Mason and non-Pentecostals led by Charles P. Jones. Charles W. Gray was the founding bishop of the Church of God (Sanctified Church). In 1927, the Church of God (Sanctified Church) split and Gray formed a new body, the Original Church of God or Sanctified Church.
