Description:

M. E. (Mahlon E.) Layne, an active A/G layman, provided funds for the establishment of the Layne Hospitality Home of San Diego in 1941. The home served as a temporary residence for Navy men who desired to be in a Christian environment while on leave. The home housed thirty men. Retired A/G pastor Irvin Rattan and his wife Bertha served as the first directors of the home.
This correspondence bagan with Marge Marshall's request for donations to purchase a headstone for Bertha Rattan's grave. Marge sent the request to those who had been residents of the Home during its existence (1941-1975). She included interesting historical information about the home and received such a great response that she began sending out a newsletter (The Home News : Echoes from Layne's Hospitality Home for Servicemen, 1996-Feb 2007).
