She was called to China as a missionary when she was a child. She attended Central Bible Institute, finishing in 1929. Afterwards she went to Canton, China as an Assemblies of God missionary. Later she started a church in the Hong Kong area. She was interned by the Japanese in World War II. Then she was repatriated in 1942.

On the tape she states that she heard a minister's wife in the United States speak in Cantonese during an altar service. The woman did not know the language and talked and sang in Cantonese for about fifteen minutes.
