Title:

Clip file, 1931-1932 : Dispute between Jennie Seymour and R. D. Griffith

Format:

19 p. ; 28 cm.

Description:

Apostolic Faith Mission (Los Angeles, CA), home of the Azusa Street revival from 1906 to 1909, became divided in late 1930 over leadership of the mission. After the death in 1922 of the mission's founder, William Seymour, his widow, Jennie Seymour, took over the pastorate. When she became ill in 1930, she asked Ruthford D. Griffith to help her by leading services. Griffith decided that he should replace her as pastor, resulting in a dispute over leadership and ownership of the mission. Seymour was black and Griffith was white. Seymour led a black contingent, while Griffith led a white contingent. The dispute went to court in 1931 and was covered by local newspapers. Seymour prevailed in court in 1932.
