Title:

Benjamin Calvin Bubar, Sr. (b. Blaine, ME, Aug 7, 1876; d. Waterville, ME, July 4, 1967)

Format:

8 folders ; 28 cm.

Description:

Benjamin Bubar was an evangelical minister in Maine. Though he did not like to identify himself with a particular denomination, he pastored several Baptist churches in the state and was eventually ordained under the United Baptist Convention. He preferred to be known as a ‘traveling evangelist’ and preached in most of the Protestant churches in Maine. Bubar was also known as ‘the drugless physician,’ though he was not licensed. He was the ‘first practicing chiropractor’ in the state of Maine. His prescriptions often included a special diet and a regimen of fasting and prayer. Though Bubar never held political office, he was outspoken on many political issues (He was an early supporter of the Ku Klux Klan). According to Patricia Pickard, he ‘stumped’ for and supported men who he felt were qualified to hold political positions. He fellowshipped with Pentecostals and was a close friend of E.W. Kenyon, sharing the pulpit with him in several evangelistic campaigns. Bubar preached the value of the gift of the ‘Holy Ghost’ with evidence of speaking in tongues, which he called ‘the second blessing,’ though he did not view glossolalia as a necessarily required experience for everyone.

Patricia Pickard has noted the following as 'related topics:' Ku Klux Klan, Sabean, Baptist, Healing.
