Bebe H. Patten, born Willie Bebe Harrison in 1913, began her evangelistic ministry while still in her teens. In the early years of her ministry she was affiliated with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. In 1935, she married C. Thomas Patten, who joined her in her evangelistic ministry. That same year she was ordained by the interdenominational Ministerial Association of Evangelism. In 1944, the Pattens moved to Oakland, California, where Bebe founded the Christian Evangelical Churches of America and the Oakland Bible Institute, which later became Patten University. In 1950, Thomas Patten, though he maintained his innocence, was convicted of defrauding their followers and served three years in prison.
