Description:
|
Thesis (M.Mu.)--University of Memphis, 2008.
Includes abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to discover the musical characteristics and customs of the Azusa Street revival of Los Angels, 1906-1908, including corporate hymns sung at the revival from memory by attendees, as well as an investigation of the early Pentecostal practice of 'singing in the Spirit.' These findings were the result of analyzing witness accounts both from adherents of the new Pentecostal theology, and from observers who opposed the movement. The paper contains a collection of hymns discovered through the study and demonstrates musical traits of singing in the Spirit and the evidence of its origins in African American song. The paper also analyzes an early Pentecostal hymnbook that contains the work of known Azusa Street attendees, resulting in an exposition of early Pentecostal topical theology and changes in church compositional practices from 1870-1910. A collection of hymns selected from this hymnbook is included.
Bibliography: leaves 136-142.
