Description:

Description: Press photo of Evangelist David Wilkerson; December 1963.

Caption with photograph says: 'Reverend Wilkerson's astonishing experiences with the teen-age street gangs of New York shine like a good deed in a wicked world. THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE (Bernard Geis Associations, $4.95, May 31st) is the story of a country minister's call to the big city slums and his remarkably successful attempts to save young criminals and reclaim narcotics additcts by substituting the cross for the switchblade. David Wilkerson is descended from a long line of clergymen, dating back to the days of the Protestant Reformation. Married and the father of three children, Reverend Wilkerson left his little mountain parish in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania about five years ago. Today, his Teen Challenge Centers operate in Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles and at a farm near Rehrersburg, Pennsylvania rehabilitating slum youngsters and giving them a chance at a better life.
