Hawkins was a Church of God in Christ singer, songwriter, and musician who achieved a degree of fame in popular/gospel music. He received four Grammy awards, including his arrangement of 'Oh, happy day.'

This album was the first recording of the arrangement of 'Oh, happy day' by Edwin Hawkins, performed by a Church of God in Christ youth choir as a fundraiser. Although released in a limited run, a copy was picked up by a local radio station and became an instant sensation. The song quickly became a classic, not only in black gospel music, but in broader gospel and popular music.

One of the singers in this choir was Lillie Knauls. Although not featured on this album, the success of the album and the song 'Oh, happy day' helped to launch her career in gospel music.
