Description:

The January 2006 death of journalist, Harry Farrell, who covered a murder/kidnapping in 1933, aroused interest in the case. A brother of AG pastor, R. J. Thurmond, Thomas Thurmond and John Holmes kidnapped and brutally murdered a 22-year-old heir to a wealthy family in San Jose. A mob dragged Thurmond and Holmes to a nearby park and hanged them. The then California governor, James Rolph, Jr. supported the lynching. AG pastor, J. Narver Gortner and many other pastors and civic leaders spoke out strongly against the lynchings and the governor's attitude. Wayne Warner made reference to this crime in the Summer 1988 issue of Heritage Magazine.
