Description: Postcard of the exterior of Free Mission Church (Enderlin, ND); circa 1971.
Postcard is stamped on the back with a date of September 24, 1971.
The Free Mission (Enderlin, ND) was established by Scandinavian immigrants in the 1880s. In 1905, the congregation purchased the former Methodist church. In 1906, John Thompson became the congregation's first regular pastor. Thompson commuted from Moorhead, Minnesota, where he also pastored the Swedish Free Mission. The Moorhead congregation was one of about a dozen small independent Scandinavian Free Mission congregations, primarily in Minnesota, that had been practicing tongues speech since the late 1890s or early 1900s. Thompson joined the Fargo Assembly of God when it was organized in 1926, but continued holding services in the Enderlin Free Mission until his death in 1940. The degree to which the congregation could have been considered Pentecostal in unknown. The congregation joined the Evangelical Free Church in the 1950s.
