Title:

Clip file. Jonathan Elsworth Perkins.

Format:

5 folders ; 28 cm.

Description:

This is a collection of articles, correspondence and news clips sent by Leatha Perkins Dahlgren (middle daughter of Jonathan Perkins) concerning various individuals and topics with which Jonathan was involved. The materials have been separated and categorized by those individuals and topics. A few items appear to be dated after his death, however, they follow in the same vein of the items he collected during his lifetime.

There is a discrepancy concerning the spelling of Jonathan E. Perkins' middle name. Some published items use the Ellsworth spelling, some use Elsworth. The correct spelling, according to Perkins’ ordination application, is Elsworth. All catalog records reflect the correct spelling regardless of the way it is spelled on the published item.

Jonathan Elsworth Perkins was a controversial minister who held credentials with the Assemblies of God from 1922 through 1931. Among some worthy titles (The Brooding Presence, and The Rainbow of Hope), he wrote a book titled Pentecostalism on the Washboard in which he 'decided to include the moral rot of our own movement.' In this book he accuses the General Council of covering up sin. He stated, 'The respect I once had for Pentecostal leadership is dead.' Though some elements of truth appear in the book, much of the content is false. The folder titled 'Individuals' contains information on the following: A.A. Allen; Robert J. Craig; O. L. Jaggers; J. Narver Gortner; J. Charles Jessup; A. W. Kortkamp; A. Earl Lee; E. E. Manney; Jerry Owen; Charles F. Parham; Charles S. Price; Bob Shuler; Gerald L. K. Smith; J. W. Welch.

Folder titles: Biographical. -- General Council. -- Individuals. -- Miscellaneous.
