Description:

Weekly newspaper published by the Church of God and Saints of Christ, a denomination founded by William S. Crowdy. The church taught that black people are the true people of Israel, it adopted Jewish practices, and it was influenced by Pentecostalism. The newspaper contained references to Pentecostals. The Oct 22, 1909 issue (p. 4) included a letter from the Yonkers (NY) congregation reporting that it affirmed the gift of prophecy but taught against 'the sign of tongues.' The Feb 11, 1910 issue (p. 3) reported about a Baltimore (MD) group called 'The Holy Ghosters' led by Josiah S. Sturdevent, and the Church of the First Born (Nashville, IN), whose members were accused of handling serpents.
