Vernard Johnson grew up within the realm of the Church of God in Christ. He developed a talent with the saxophone, then began to incorporate its use in the church. He is acknowledged as a leading influence in incorporating the saxophone with choral music in COGIC churches. He also became a COGIC pastor.
