Description: Press photo of Melody Russell stacking books and evil records like Black Sabbath, Kiss, Elvis, etc.; May 1982.
Copyrighted
Photograph is stamped with a date of May 7, 1982.
Newspaper article attached to the back of the photograph says: Battling Satan. Books such as The Omen, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, phonograph records, plastic toys and other articles were destroyed at the altar of the First Assembly of God Church in Texas City Thursday night in what some church-goers called a fight against Satan. Melody Russell exhibits some of the books and records that members brought from their home, saying the materials contained subliminal messages of witchcraft and satanism. Originally, they had planned to burn the articles, but because of the rain they instead tored them to bits. See story, Section 1, Page 4.
Photograph originally was part of the Houston Chronicle Library.
