Description: Press photo of Father Divine leading a group of followers after their arrival on two excursion steamers to a 500-acre property he owned on the Hudson River in New York; 1938.
Caption with the photograph says: DEPRESSION RELIEF. On an outing from New York, Father Divine leads a group of his followers after their arrival on two excursion steamers (background) at his 500-acre 'heaven' on the Hudson River. That was in 1938. Such diversions, and especially lavish free banquets in New York's Harlem, brought thousands of followers, mostly Negroes, into Father Divine's religious movement during the depression of the 1930s.
