M. E. (Mahlon E.) Layne, an active A/G layman, provided funds for the establishment of the Layne Hospitality Home of San Diego in 1941. The home served as a temporary residence for Navy men who desired to be in a Christian environment while on leave. The home housed thirty men. Retired A/G pastor Irvin Rattan and his wife Bertha served as the first directors of the home.
Identified as Appendix I. Also contains: My fiftieth birthday greeting by M. E. Layne (Appendix III) (p. 19-24). The source of these appendices is unknown. Also includes a composition written by Mahlon's daughter, Ruth, written for English class in January 1936: 'Mr. Mahlon Layne, Developer of Underground Water Supplies' (4 p.).
