Haralan Popov (1907-1988) founded Evangelism to Communist Lands in 1970. Popov served as a Pentecostal pastor in Bulgaria from 1929 until 1948, when he was arrested on charges of treason. He was imprisoned for 13 years, was released from prison in 1961, and moved to Sweden, where his family had settled. He later moved to America.

Evangelism to Communist Lands changed its name to Door of Hope International in about 1984.
