Mr. an Mrs. M. E. (Mahlon E.) Layne, active AG laypersons, established the Layne Foundation in 1927. The foundation was non-sectarian and its pupose was to spread the gospel, care for the needy, and educate the young. In 1931, the foundation established the Towne Avenue Pancake Shop (the Pancake Mission) to feed the homeless. As of 1944, 1.5 million meals had been served to the homeless.
The author served as superintendent of the Layne Foundation Mission for 11 years. She previously served as a Seventh Day Baptist missionary to Argentina. This book provides a biographical sketch of Mr. and Mrs. Layne and a history of the Layne Foundation and its work among the homeless in Los Angeles during the Great Depression.
