Gospel Call of Russia began publication in October 1926. The founding editor, Paul B. Peterson, a missionary with Baptist and Pentecostal roots, organized the Russian and Eastern European Mission (REEM) in 1927. The magazine promoted REEM's missions work. REEM was headquartered in Chicago and, in 1928, established a field office in Danzig, Poland, led by Pentecostal missionary G. Herbert Schmidt. Gospel Call of Russia changed its name to Gospel Call in 1934, and three other Pentecostal magazines merged into Gospel Call: Latter Rain Evangel (1939); Word and Work (1940); Full Gospel Advocate (1941). REEM worked closely with the Assemblies of God until 1940, when the Assemblies of God decided to further develop its own missions program in eastern Europe.
