E. N. Richey and his son, Raymont T. Richey, founded the West End Gospel Tabernacle in Houston in 1916. The original 'barn-like' structure was replaced in 1920. In 1927 a permanent building was erected on Capitol Avenue in downtown Houston and became known as Evangelistic Temple. That building was destroyed by fire on February 3, 1932. A new structure was built on the same site, located at Capitol and Houston Avenues. That building was sold to the city of Houston in 1953, and the congregation purchased property at 2025 West Eleventh Street. In August 1966 there was a merger with Central Assembly, with the pastor, Austin Wilkerson, from Central Assembly, becoming the new pastor. The name Evangelistic Temple was retained and the location stayed the same. During the 1970s, a second campus, Evangelistic Temple North, was birthed. Later the congregation moved to a different location and was called the New Evangelistic Temple (NET).
