Elmer C. Miller, a Baptist lawyer from New Jersey, did extensive biblical and historical research concerning Pentecostal doctrines and practices after his wife began attending a Pentecostal church. He authored a series of letters in the 1930s in defense of the Pentecostal doctrines of baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, and healing, which were compiled and published in a book, Pentecost Examined by a Baptist Lawyer.
